Phoebe let out a soft laugh and, for once, teased, "Feena, aren't you jealous, asking Jack to walk me home?"
Feena's cheeks flushed, but she shook her head. "It's fine. Your safety matters more."
Phoebe glanced around. The riverside was already cloaked in darkness, and Feena's comment made her realize just how eerie it felt. A part of her really did start to feel nervous—what if someone dangerous popped out from the shadows?
She turned her gaze toward Jack, silently asking for his opinion. Though she didn't say it out loud, she was secretly hoping he'd walk her home.
Jack hesitated, glanced at Feena, then nodded. "You're right. It's not safe here. I'll walk you."
After all, this was the suburbs. Gangs still lingered in these parts, and there weren't any cameras around. Phoebe was beautiful, and if something happened, he'd never forgive himself.
