Wilhelmina let out a sharp, cold snort. "Don't pretend. Phoebe already told me and asked me to take care of you."
She pointed at the couch. "Sit. Now."
Jack felt a little embarrassed. He hadn't expected Phoebe to tell Wilhelmina about his injuries just so she would look after him.
He shook his head. "It's nothing."
"Oh? Did that chicken soup you had at lunch suddenly make you invincible?" Wilhelmina grabbed his arm and forced him down onto the couch. With a tug, she pulled open his shirt, revealing the tightly wrapped bandages beneath.
Even without seeing the wounds themselves, the way his torso was bound told her that he was severely hurt.
Tears welled in her eyes. "Why? Why would you keep something like this from me? Why didn't you say anything?"
Her words echoed almost exactly what Phoebe had said earlier—filled with nothing but genuine concern.
Jack felt warmth stir in his chest, though he tried to brush it off lightly. "It's fine. It's just a minor injury."
