Chapter 8
When Marissa was done, she sat on the couch, removed her wedding band, and placed it back into the box. After that, she shoved the marriage certificate into her backpack.
Without warning, Joshua barged through the doors of the villa, anger flashing across his eyes. Without giving her the chance to say a word, he grabbed her hands. "Roxanne nearly lost her baby after a car ran over her. Was that your doing?"
Joshua was shockingly strong. Pain shot through her tiny wrist. But his worry and rage only earned her disdain.
"Why are you looking for me after something happened to Roxanne?"
"You've been upset with Roxanne ever since that incident in Platonia. You also suspect that she and I are having an affair. And you're the only one she told about her pregnancy. Who else could it be?"
Feeling extremely speechless, Marissa withdrew her hand that was in pain.
"You should look for the driver instead of confronting me here."
He hissed, "The driver confessed that someone paid him 50 thousand dollars to run over a pregnant woman so that she'd lose her baby. He described her as a beautiful blind lady with long, straight hair."
"That's nonsense! I never did anything like that!"
Despite Marissa's best efforts at clearing things up, Joshua refused to listen. He adamantly believed that she was the culprit. "You need to explain yourself to Roxanne. Come with me."
Joshua dragged Marissa out of the villa without consideration for her health post-recovery. He shoved her into the front passenger seat. Her belly hit the seat hard, sending a wave of pain that caused her to break out in a sweat.
He sped to the hospital, just in time for the end of the surgery. When the doctor emerged from the operating room, Joshua flung himself at him. The leading surgeon sighed and shook his head helplessly.
"I'm sorry. We lost the baby. The damage to Ms. Eagan's uterus is irreversible. We fear that she might be infertile from now on."
Joshua clenched his teeth. As tears welled up, anger simmered within him. He glared at Marissa, something that he had never done.
She was taken aback at his resentful look that was like a blade piercing through every part of her body. Did he truly hate her that much—enough to want her dead, all because of Roxanne's miscarriage?
Roxanne was wheeled out at that moment. Joshua immediately left Marissa behind as he rushed over to check on Roxanne.
Marissa, who stood frozen on the spot, was shoved to the ground. Blood gushed out when her head slammed against the fire extinguisher stand in the corridor.
