Two days later, Melanie's birthday rolled around. Dustin cleared up his schedule in order to celebrate it with her. However, right as he was about to order her a cake, he abruptly realized that he knew next to nothing about her. In fact, he didn't even know what kind of cake she preferred. Feeling resigned, he had no choice but to get her one of each. If his memory served, this should be the first time he'd ever celebrated Melanie's birthday with her. Prior to the accident, Dustin was a golden boy. He would never pay any attention to the birthday of a poor student whom his family was supporting financially. Later on, when she approached him again, his injuries had left him bitter and withdrawn. So, he ended up taking all his frustration and anger out on her.
