It hurt. A lot.
When the tsunami hit, Daniel Richards threw himself over David Davies, shielding him with everything he had.
The wind howled, waves crashing down one after another, taller and wilder each time. Water pounded into every corner around them—even though they were already on the highest point of the soccer field. But when the surge came, it still slammed into them like an unstoppable beast, like boulders smashing down on their backs.
Pain seared through him, sharp and relentless. But Daniel clamped his jaw tight, refusing to give in. He knew—if he went down, there'd be no one left to protect David.
They were both freezing, close to hypothermia. Even with the agony shooting through him, Daniel rubbed David’s hands to warm him up, then gritted his teeth and struggled to unfasten his backpack. Fingers trembling, he pulled out the last of their supplies: a heat blanket, a half-eaten pack of compressed biscuits, and a military flask with just a bit of warm water left.
