Chapter 49
Morning light filtered through the mist, spilling softly into the bedroom.
Elaria was packing. Just a change of clothes and her little dog, nothing more. She didn't need much to leave the Richards household behind.
The bedroom door opened. Sebastian stepped in.
Moments ago, he had a heated argument with his mother. She was furious he'd kept Elaria's secret from her. He thought she was just being unreasonable.
As soon as he walked in, he saw Elaria bending over, folding the quilt. The bedsheets were still warm from the night before-their bodies had left traces that hadn't yet faded. Sebastian walked over and pulled her gently into his arms.
He said nothing, but she understood. He didn't want her to leave.
The whole thing felt ridiculous to her, but she still tried to keep her tone calm. "Sebastian, just look at how small and pathetic I've become in this marriage. Today, everyone found out I can't have kids. All those stares... I can't take it anymore."
His voice came out rough, raspy. "
