Chapter 2 The Truth

Smoke filled the car, the choking smell lingering as Catherine sat in the passenger seat, seemingly unaffected. The man at the wheel glanced over at the distraught woman, irritation creasing his brow. "You foolish woman, in such a situation, you do nothing." He tossed his cigarette outside, rolled down the window fully, letting the cold wind rush in. The smoke in the car dispersed instantly, and Catherine snapped out of her daze. "What? In that situation just now, you should have barged in. After all, it would have made things more interesting, wouldn't it?" Hearing his words, Catherine turned her head, looking at Curtis with a mix of anger and disbelief, her earlier frustration and despair suddenly disappearing. She felt like she had glimpsed some truth. "You knew about tonight, didn't you?" If he didn't know about it, how did he get that room key? As for what happened inside that hotel room, she could temporarily overlook it. "You knew what would happen between him and his cousin tonight, yet you let it happen, even bringing me here. Is this your idea of a boring game?" Catherine's voice trembled. She hoped to appear stronger this way, but it seemed that this attempt only wounded her further. As for the other, he was just a bystander from start to finish. "Is this the plan you and your brother discussed to deal with me?" Crying was not appropriate at this moment. Catherine couldn't control her tears, they flowed incessantly. Yes, she did have a chance earlier to push open that door and confront them fiercely. To question them wildly about why they would do such disgusting things. But she didn't. At the moment of truth, she chose to let go. She fled from that mansion, getting into the car. From beginning to end, Curtis was an outsider, coldly witnessing everything unfold, watching her collapse helplessly, and then watching her, like a coward, run out of the mansion, avoiding it all. Suddenly, Curtis reached out, gripping Catherine's chin tightly, his eyes turning dangerous in an instant. "Darling, do you want to hear what you just said? What makes you think we would deal with you? What makes you think you have the right to make us deal with you?" Catherine's face turned pale in an instant. Yes, she was just an insignificant woman, dispensable to their family, so they had no reason to do something so ridiculous and foolish. "You clearly saw it all, and today's events are just the most common thing in your future life. It's just that the woman went from being unrelated to becoming family. Can't you accept that? I'm just trying to help you accept it earlier." Look at these seemingly righteous words, but they sounded so ridiculous. There were so many ways to accept it, why did it have to be this one? "It's your cowardice, your incompetence. You could have gone in directly. I told you, if I were interested, I could help you change everything, but you didn't want to. Do you want to blame it all on me?" Curtis lightly slapped Catherine's face, his tone full of mockery. On this matter, he was indeed a despicable person, watching everything happen before his eyes without doing anything. But he also had some conscience. At least he had promised to help Catherine out of this predicament, but the premise was that he was interested. However, when Catherine chose to flee at that moment of truth, he felt that this matter had become meaningless. He spent the night wanting to see something more exciting, not such a bland outcome. "Forget it, the women of the Wentworth family are all so boring and rigid, sacrificing themselves for the so-called harmony and reputation of the family." Curtis rolled up the car window. "Get out." An uninteresting woman didn't deserve to sit in his car. Suddenly, Catherine remembered what had happened in the family a few days ago. There was a sister who had also married into another family through an alliance, but those people were even more crazy. Clearly, that sister had many opportunities to escape that terrifying and suffocating environment, but she chose to hold onto the family rules for the so-called glory and face of the family, and she still refused to leave until now. When she came to this mansion, she was indeed tempted by Curtis. Even before her hand was about to push open that door, she had always hoped to break free from it all. But now she sat in this car, just like that sister, choosing a way to hurt herself while preserving the so-called bigger picture, allowing everything to return to calm. "Can't you hear what I'm saying? Get out!" The man's annoyed voice rang in her ears, and Catherine pursed her lips. Everything that happened tonight had completely exceeded her expectations. And this man made her situation even more embarrassing. After a moment, she suddenly withdrew her hand. Was she just going to leave like this? She felt a bit unwilling, but she didn't want to break everything. Catherine turned her head, she suddenly grabbed Curtis's shirt collar, pulling him close. The distance between them narrowed in an instant, just one finger away from touching each other's noses. "What? Have you come up with something more interesting? But if this interesting thing is related to me, then I don't think it's necessary." Curtis was willing to push Catherine away, and she fell to the car door, making a loud noise. Her back ached, her mind blank. Catherine gritted her teeth, feeling her previous action was too crazy. The man straightened his shirt. "I don't have time to play your revenge games. Get out of my car." He drove her away once again. If someone familiar with him were present, they could see that Curtis's mood was very bad right now. If someone dared to provoke him now, they would definitely see him furious. But Catherine didn't know at all how bad his mood was right now. She just felt that if she didn't seize this opportunity, there would never be such a chance again. "If you really find it boring, you wouldn't have brought me here. I think you can look forward to what's coming next." Catherine's voice trembled, but it was calm.
