#Chapter 40: Dangerous City
Ella POV
“It’s been a long day,” my father said sternly. “Ella needs to rest.”
It was clear that David had more he wanted to say, but he wasn’t going to argue with my father in public. He nodded his head mutely and stepped aside.
My father put his arm around my shoulders and led me quickly away from the crowd of onlookers. Before I knew it, we were in the car and heading home.
My father sat in the seat beside me with a look of concentration on his face. I still felt shaken by what had happened. I wasn’t sure what to do or even what to think.
I wanted to say something to my father to take away his stress, but there was nothing that I could think of.
My phone started to ring. Without thinking, I pulled it out of my pocket. It was Alexander calling. The contact name made me fumble, nearly dropping my phone. I quickly muted my screen to avoid my father seeing it.
