"I was best buddies with her grandpa my whole life. I owe him big—he saved my life once. You can’t just let him lose face over this. And hey, I was the one who pushed for you and Emily to get married. That’s on me. But you got the papers and dipped for two years. She’s been stuck all alone ever since. Edward narrowed his eyes slightly, his stare deepening.
"Do you hear me, kid?"
Faced with Gerry Hawthorne’s anxious and pressing gaze, Edward finally gave a reluctant nod.

After parting ways with Gerry, Edward got back in his car. Staring at the photos in his phone, images flashed across his mind—some guy leaving Emily’s apartment, then hugging another woman outside a bus stop.
