Chapter 40
As the end of the workday approached, employees on the 33rd floor started wrapping things up. Some finished early and left right on the dot.
“Hey, that new steakhouse in the mall next door just opened. Wanna check it out?”
“Yeah, totally! Don’t have to work late tonight anyway.”
The two women grabbed their bags and made their way out. As they passed the workstation closest to the CEO’s office, the woman on the left accidentally caught someone else's soft leather purse with her tote, sending it tumbling to the floor.
The thick, swirl-patterned carpet muffled the sound, and the women, too busy chatting and laughing, didn’t notice. They kept walking, still lost in their conversation.
People were trickling out, one after another. Edward stepped out of his office, his custom black leather shoes sinking slightly into the plush carpet. The bright overhead lights cast a tall shadow over the fallen purse.
The zipper was half-open, and a corner of a document peeked out.
