206 A Twisted Comfort
As the dust settled from the day's confrontations and accusations, Emma found herself pondering over Alex's unexpected interference. The notion that Alex, of all people, had stepped in to play the protector was both ironic and unwelcome. Her resolve was clear; assistance from anyone but Alex would have been preferable.
"Why did you even bother showing up today?" Emma's tone was laced with skepticism as she confronted Alex, her patience thinning. The inquiry wasn't just a question but a shield, guarding her from acknowledging any vestige of past connections.
Alex, momentarily taken aback by Emma's cold reception, sought to explain, "I was merely... concerned. The atmosphere here isn't what you're used to. Knowing what I know now, I felt compelled to intervene. But it seems I've overstepped."
His justification, however, did little to soften Emma's stance. "Concern? Your sudden gallantry is misplaced. If you genuinely wish to help, start by not complicating my life further," Emma
