NATHAN Ten months later New Year’s Eve Stuffing my hands into my pockets, I look out over the New York City skyline. In the distance, fireworks light up the night sky, and I smile at how my brothers and I always insisted on shooting off the fireworks before midnight when we were kids. This is the first New Year’s I haven’t spent with my family. Well, that part of my family at least. I have a new one now. Turning around, I watch her sleep. Although she’s wearing nothing but a pair of panties, she’s kicked off the covers, and her hand rests protectively on the swell of her belly. Our baby’s due date was two days ago, but he’s refusing to leave the comfort of his mother’s womb. Stubborn, just like his dad. I take off my pants and crawl into bed beside her, slipping my hand over her hip as I press my chest against her bare skin. She shifts onto her back and lets out a sleepy sigh. “I fell asleep. Have I missed the ball drop?” Dropping a kiss on her shoulder, I glance at the TV on the wall.
