Lucian's expression darkened at my question. He set his fork down, his features tensing. "They were old friends," he finally said. "Friends who betrayed me in the past. I won't be seeing them again."
I frowned, sensing there was more he wasn't saying. "But what exactly happened between you and John? What did he do?"
Lucian let out a sigh as he picked up his wine glass and took a long sip. "It's in the past, Anna. Leave it there. I don't want to discuss it."
But I wanted to push further. I wanted to know everything about him. But I knew Lucian well enough to recognize when he was closing a door. He wasn't ready to talk about it.
A beat of silence passed before I found myself asking the question that had been nagging at me since the supermarket encounter.
"And Judy? What is your relationship with her?"
The air around us shifted instantly.
