It turned out that William had been overthinking it. He answered, "No. This is fine."
Jeanette hummed in response. "I'm pretty tired. I'm going to sleep."
William had no objections. She'd been up all night, and she did need the rest.
He reached over and turned off the light.
After washing up, Jeanette got into bed and fell fast asleep not long after.
William watched her sleeping face, his gaze darkening slightly. He told himself to forget it. The distance between them was too deep—there was no way it could disappear overnight.
He understood her. For now, this was enough.
After all, his original goal had only ever been to make sure she stayed safe. He could think of it as making up for those three years. With that thought, he closed his eyes and drifted off.
