Ken was about to say something more, but Marceline had already hung up. Feeling a little guilty, he exchanged a glance with Curtis through the rearview mirror and awkwardly put down his phone.
Curtis let out a cold chuckle, his eyes full of mockery. "Who told you to call her? She's probably hoping I'll die sooner, so she can quickly be with the person she actually likes."
Ken silently tightened his grip on the steering wheel, not daring to speak. In his mind, he was still deciding if he should drive back to Cloudcrest Bay or head to the hospital.
Curtis stared at the car ceiling, the dim interior lightning combined with intermittent flashes from outside highlighting the self-disgust deep in his eyes.
After a long while, he finally said, "Take me back to Cloudcrest Bay."
"But Mr. Wolfe, your hand—"
"It's fine."
So, Ken had no choice but to drive home.
