"Curtis, let go of her. Let her speak," said Hugh.
Curtis yanked Marceline to her feet, his hand still clamped over her mouth.
"Jen, keep Grandpa company for a bit. He's not doing great these days. Don't get him worked up again. Otherwise, I'm the one who gets called the 'ungrateful grandson' again."
With that, he dragged Marceline out into the courtyard and dropped to his knees with a heavy thud. But she had no intention of kneeling.
"Come here. Don't just stand there. You'll be seen," Curtis muttered.
Curtis pulled her close, still kneeling, back stiff and straight. She stood her ground, refusing to kneel.
He didn't push her. This spot was a blind angle. Hugh wouldn't be able to see them from here.
Through the floor-to-ceiling window, Curtis caught a glimpse of Hugh talking with Jenna. His temper seemed to have already cooled.
