Chapter 5
Alice fixed her gaze on Cecelia, hoping to see her stunned expression.
However, Cecelia was cool as a cucumber. She even pulled out the divorce agreement and handed it over. "I've been meaning to divorce Shaun as well. This is the divorce agreement. But he won't sign if it's from me, so I'll need you to pass it to him."
Alice took the agreement, her eyes briefly widening in surprise before shifting to a taunting look.
She leaned toward Cecelia, like a snake ready to strike. "Do you really think I can't get him to sign? I'll even tell you the truth. Larry is our child, and we've been together for years.
"Back then, when his sex addiction flared up, I was the one who pulled him back from the brink. You should be thanking me that you didn't end up as a widow."
Seeing how aggressive Alice was, Cecelia couldn't help but recall what she looked like seven years ago when she was gravely ill.
Back then, when they were found to be a match, Alice grabbed Cecelia's hand and sobbed like her heart was breaking, begging Cecilia to save her life.
She even promised she would be forever in Cecelia's debt.
Cecelia was swayed by Alice's humble plea. She readily agreed to the surgery and even told Shaun to bring Alice supplements from time to time and keep an eye out for any post-surgery complications.
Looking back now, they must have hooked up at that time.
Cecelia's voice was calm, like getting divorced was no big deal. "There's the divorce agreement. Get him to sign, and he's all yours."
Alice chuckled, her eyes brimming with ambition. "But is that really enough? You know Shaun pretty well. If you suddenly walk away, he'll chase after you relentlessly and never get you out of his head. I have to make sure he is done with you once and for all."
Her words were still hanging in the air when footsteps sounded outside. The moment Shaun walked in, Alice suddenly threw herself backward, dropping to the floor.
Her eyes were misty as she choked out, "I know you don't like Larry, but you can't do this to him, Cece."
Frowning, Cecelia was about to ask what nonsense Alice was spewing when Shaun coldly scolded, "When have you become so unforgiving, Cecelia?
"I've already scolded Larry for breaking your bracelet, but you went and fed him mango when he is allergic to it. Worst of all, you also put your hands on Alice."
Cecelia found it utterly ridiculous and fired back, "I haven't seen Larry since I returned to my room, let alone touch Alice. There are cameras all over this place. Check them yourself if you don't believe me."
Upon hearing "cameras", Alice stiffened with a hint of panic flickering in her eyes.
However, Shaun brushed past Cecelia's words and grunted. "Larry told me that you fed it to him. Why would a five-year-old lie?"
When she saw the blatant distrust in his eyes, she felt a sharp pang of irony.
She recalled a time in school when a teacher accused her of cheating. He went straight to the principal's office, slammed his hand on the desk, and demanded a thorough investigation. He even declared in front of the whole school, "I trust her."
Back then, he looked her in the eye and earnestly said, "Even if the whole world doesn't believe you, I'll always be on your side, Cecelia."
But now, the man who had promised to always trust her was fooled by lies, doubting her with the words that cut the deepest.
Alice knew what to say, yanking Shaun out of his anger a little. "You should check on Larry, Shaun. He must be miserable. I'm not mad at Cece anymore."
Shaun hummed in acknowledgment and looked at Cecelia one last time before spinning on his heels. His tone was heavy with disappointment. "You've changed so much, Cece. You felt like a stranger to me now. You should learn from Alice's kindness and grace."
The door slammed shut behind him, leaving nothing but silence behind. Cecelia stood there, laughing softly in despair.
She was still the same. What had changed was the love between them that had already vanished.
