I was startled again. He was literally watching my reaction, his voice low and raspy as he spoke slowly.
“Honestly, I don’t really get along with my parents. To them, only Matthew matters. Outside of business stuff, we’ve got nothing to talk about... I just hoped they'd see me, so as long as they didn’t cross the line, I let it slide.”
“And yeah… I didn’t understand emotions well. I didn’t treat you the way I should have. I never stepped into your shoes... I'm sorry, Isabella.”
My face stiffened slightly.
In two lifetimes, I'd never heard Ronald explain himself in such detail. He’s always been the type to bottle everything up, even if it choked him. Today, though, he laid it all out — why he never stood up for me in front of his parents, and even gave me a serious apology.
Honestly, the Isabella from my past life would’ve been desperate for an apology like this from him. Or not even an apology — just a little bit of empathy would’ve been enough.
But now? It's all way, way too late.
