Maria Lewis couldn’t tell the truth, so she replied, “You probably heard—her uncle had a terrible car accident. I haven’t told her yet. I was afraid if she came, someone might slip up.”
Grandma Bennett nodded, showing she understood. “That makes sense. How’s her uncle doing?”
