Chapter 57
Maria tugged David to sit down, noticing how fast he was drinking water, so she gently patted his back. “He probably didn’t see anything, don’t stress.”
“By the way… did you tell him we’re engaged?” David frowned.
Maria frowned too. “Definitely not. He hasn’t even talked to me much this week.”
“He asked me directly, and I figured maybe you mentioned it, so I just blurted it out—said we were.”
“It’s fine, no biggie. If he wants to believe we’re engaged, let him.” Honestly, it saved her a ton of trouble.
Today’s minor scare was a wake-up call though—Maria knew she had to be more careful whenever the kids went out. She arranged a week off for them, told Amanda King to keep them from going downstairs, and rang up Isabella to ask her to drop by and keep the kids company.
Monday came with blazing sunshine, casting a golden glow over everything.
Traffic was a nightmare. It was already 10:20 a.m. by the time she reached Bennett Corp.
Maria muttered a quiet curse and rushed inside.
“Ms. Lewis.”
