James had no clue about how good Amelia was at playing innocent. He didn’t question her one bit. “I’m not blaming you,” he said calmly.
Amelia lit up like the sun breaking through clouds. Her tone perked up, “I knew it! You’d never be mad at me, James!”
“I’ve got work to do at the company,” James added as he started the car. “Not sure how late I’ll be. Let me drop you off first.”
Meanwhile at the hospital, David eyed the bag Amelia had brought and frowned. “Since when did you two get so chummy?”
“Yeah, right,” Maria snorted. “She’s just putting on a show in front of James. We literally argued like two hours ago. Anyone with eyes can see through her act—except James. He treats her like she’s a treasure.”
She went on a rant, trashing Amelia, then dragging James into it. David watched her with a helpless smile.
