Lucas froze like he'd been hit with a spell. Then, he reflexively denied it. "No." "Good," Miranda said flatly. "I'll be out of town the next few days. Don't come looking for me. Let's talk when the cooling-off period ends." Lucas didn't understand. "Aren't you gonna go pick it up? I threw it away! I just tossed the thing you kept in the safe!" Why wasn't she going to get it? Didn't she want it anymore? Miranda's expression didn't flicker. She used to keep it in a safe because it meant something, but now… "Since the safe is open, you might as well throw away everything in there." Lucas stood there in a daze. It felt like something had yanked his heart out and left a gaping hole in his chest. It hurt badly. Miranda glanced at Brett, who wasn't as drunk as Lucas was. "Take him home."
