Chapter 94
Lucas did not make it out of the neighborhood successfully. The moment he appeared at the gate, security stopped him for questioning.
Maybe it was because he looked so wrecked, but they didn't call the police. However, they warned him that they would not be so lenient if this happened again.
He thought inwardly, maybe there wouldn't be a next time anyway.
Lucas went home, washed up, and dragged himself to work.
Before noon, William messaged him, "Done yet?"
The numb pain in his chest pulsed again. His expression darkened, and he tossed the phone aside. After work, he drove over.
The moment he stepped into the house, Jake ran toward him and clung to his leg, eyes full of hope. "Where's Mom? You said you'd bring her back. Where is she?"
Lucas could not even look him in the eyes. He drew a long, heavy breath, trying to release some of the weight crushing his chest.
He crouched down. "I'm sorry. I couldn't bring her back."
Jake's eyes instantly filled with tears. "Why not?"
