Chapter 2
The room was silent for a few seconds after I said that. I caught a glimpse of joy on their faces. It was as if they couldn't wait to kick me out.
Jeffery looked at me smugly. "You said that yourself. Don't regret it."
I calmly replied, "I won't."
Seeing how quickly I agreed, Jeffery was stunned. He didn't know why he was upset when he had been looking forward to this.
However, he still pulled out the divorce papers from the drawer and handed them to me so I could sign them. I leaned forward and signed the papers under their eager gazes.
Jeffery promptly signed the papers as well. Then, he said sincerely, "This is only a fake divorce.
"In the next month, I'll do everything I can to get Ford Group back in business again. I'm only divorcing you now so you won't have to suffer with me.
"You have to understand. After one month, we can get back together again."
I wanted to tell him that this was no fake divorce. To me, the divorce was very real.
When I turned around to exit the room, I heard Douglas' excited voice as I approached the door. "This is great!
"Now, Grandpa can finally marry Grandaunt Jessica. Grandaunt Jessica is going to be our grandmother!"
However, his voice quickly died down. He'd probably covered his mouth so I wouldn't hear him.
I laughed so hard I started crying. For the last 30 years, I had given up my dreams and become a housewife for Jeffery.
I worked hard to raise my children and grandchildren. Never once had I allowed myself to rest.
I thought I could earn their love through my hard work, but I now knew that I was nothing but a lazy, slobby housewife to them. I didn't know why I had tried so hard to maintain a family like this.
Since they liked Jessica that much, I would fulfill their wishes. I would leave them in a week.
I quit all my jobs the next morning, but I couldn't resign from my janitor role at the concert hall. The manager said a big shot had rented the entire concert hall to throw a concert for his wife.
The hall had to be spotless because a lot of famous figures were invited, so he needed an extra hand. He asked me to stay for one more day and promised to triple my pay. He was so insistent that I couldn't bring myself to refuse.
However, I was surprised to find out that Jeffery was the one who had rented out the entire concert hall. Jessica was interested in music and wanted to throw her very own concert, so Jeffery rented the entire concert hall for her. He even invited hundreds of famous figures to be her audience.
20 years ago, the handbag I had made in my spare time suddenly went viral. Many netizens asked me to open a shop so they could buy my handbags.
I was flattered that people liked the things I made, so I discussed it with Jeffery that night. However, he became angry and yelled at me.
"Sienna, you're already 30 and married, so can you think about others for once? If you choose to focus on this, who will take care of me and our kids?
"Don't be so selfish. You're my wife and our kids' mother. You need to carry this burden."
The crowd went wild when Jeffery and Jessica walked hand in hand into the hall.
"Mr. Ford has never attended an event with a female partner. That lady must be his wife. She's so pretty."
"She's even a famous musician. What a strong, independent woman."
"They didn't hold a wedding when they got married due to some circumstances, so Mr. Ford proposed to her again a few days ago. They're going to have their wedding in Gryndale soon."
I felt my nails dig into my palms as I listened in on their conversations. I used to ask Jeffery to take me to events and introduce me to his friends, but he always refused.
He used to say, "Our lives are private. What's the point of acting all lovey-dovey in front of outsiders?
"Haven't you heard that the more a couple shows off, the sooner they'll break up? Don't be so vain, Sienna."
It wasn't that he didn't like to bring a female partner along. He just didn't want it to be me. It was simply the special treatment he would only give to the one he loved.
Suddenly, Jessica's sharp eyes spotted me. She called out to me, "Sienna, why are you here?"
Jeffery turned to me upon hearing her words. His gentle expression fell the moment he saw me. "Sienna, are you stalking me?
"You never learn, do you? I already told you there's nothing between me and Jessica. She's just my stepsister. Why won't you let us go even after the divorce?"
I tried to speak, but Jessica was quicker. She held my hand and looked at me sadly.
"Sienna, you could have anything you want at home, so why are you working as a janitor here? Are you acting like this so others would think you were being abused? Do you want them to accuse Jeffery of living the high life while letting his wife suffer?"
She sounded so hurt that it upset the audience. They pointed at me and whispered among themselves.
I had spent almost half of my life as a housewife. It was my first time being put on the spot like this, so I was at a loss.
Jessica continued, "Sienna, stop making a fool of yourself like this. Come home with me.
"You can come to me if there's anything you're unhappy with. Just stop harming yourself like this." She looked like she was on the verge of tears, but her nails mercilessly dug into my arm.
The pain caused me to push her away. I didn't use much force, yet she fell like a leaf and knocked her head against the edge of a table. Blood gushed out of her forehead.
"Jessica!" In his panic, Jeffery rushed forward and shoved me aside.
Caught by surprise, I was pushed down the stairs. My right leg bent in the wrong direction.
However, it was as if Jeffery hadn't seen anything at all. He picked up Jessica in a bridal carry and walked out.
I watched their backs fade into the distance and smiled self-deprecatingly. It was fine. I was leaving soon, anyway.
It didn't matter whether he cared about me or not. In six days, I would leave them forever.
