Chapter 22 Her Indifference

Lindsey Juhl remembered when she used to look at Zayn Guggenheim with affection, but time and time again, all she got in return was his hatred. She was no longer the same Lindsey from before. "Fine! That’s great!" Zayn was so angry that he gritted his teeth. His face was already as cold as an iceberg, but at this moment, it even exuded an unapproachable aura. "I'll go back to my room first if you have nothing else." Without any extra interactions, Zayn saw her ruthlessness and indifference and had an indescribable feeling in his heart. He suddenly recalled what he asked Jenny Lenig earlier, and her words kept echoing in his ears. The thought that this woman loathed him and was unwilling to say another word to him made Zayn inexplicably irritated. After a long day at work, Lindsey felt exhausted. There were too many things she could not cope with and all she wanted was a good rest. After she took a shower and came out of the bathroom, she was startled when she saw the person by the bed. "Do you need anything?" Suppressing the panic in her heart, Lindsey pretended as if nothing was wrong. "You’re my legitimate wife. Do I need a reason to come into your room?" Zayn was upset, but he was unaware of how different the words he uttered were from how he used to say them. "Don't worry, I won't pester you anymore. Bring me the divorce papers and I’ll set you free." Lindsey thought that Zayn was agreeing to the divorce, that was why she said such words. ‘Divorce?! Divorce again!’ ‘She was the one who forced him to marry her, and now she wanted to force him to get a divorce? Who did she think he was?!’ "Lindsey Juhl! Didn't I tell you? You’ll never get to divorce me in this life!" Zayn was so aggravated that he punched the wall by her ear. His fist was bleeding, but he did not seem to care. Lindsey felt the wind from the punch, which made her ears feel warm. She was stunned and taken aback by Zayn's unexplained temper. "Zayn Guggenheim! You don't love me and I no longer love you, so divorce is just a matter of time. Looking at your manic attitude, those who don't know our situation will think you actually have some affection for me!" "Shut up!" Hearing her say that she no longer loved him, Zayn’s heart tensed up, but the words that came out of his mouth were extremely hurtful. "A woman like you is not even worthy enough to polish my shoes. You're just a bed-warmer!" After he said that, Zayn bit Lindsey's collarbone. Lindsey sucked in a breath of cold air as she felt the fiery pain in her neck, but she forced herself to hold back. This was the first time she did not push him away! "Yeah, I'm nothing more than a bed-warmer." She closed her eyes and did not resist, like a lifeless doll. Feeling her silence and numbness, Zayn stopped. When he saw her closed eyes and that lifeless face, somewhere in his heart twitched and he was instantly turned off. "Just do your part. Even a corpse is more interesting than you!" Zayn dropped these cruel words then stormed out of the room without glancing back at her. Lindsey fell limp to the floor as if all of her strength was drained from her body. She just stared at the door where Zayn left and sat there in a daze. ...... Zayn drove his car and sped through the streets. He could not erase the indifference and despair that he saw in Lindsey’s eyes. He was strangely frustrated. The affectionate look she gave him at the beginning of their marriage was just an act. She only married into the Guggenheim family for money. Since she wanted to leave, he would not make it easy for her. A sharp ringtone interrupted Zayn's thoughts. He was initially frowning, but after he saw the caller ID on the screen, his glum expression eased a lot. When he answered the call, Jenny Lenig’s meek voice came through from the other end, "Zayn, I...Can you come over and keep me company? I'm feeling a little sick!" "Jenny, what's wrong?" "I'm at home, but my stomach doesn't feel right. Zayn, it hurts!" Without much hesitation, Zayn turned the car around and headed straight for Jenny's home. "I'll take you to the hospital!" After Zayn said that, he carried Jenny to the backseat of the car and drove her to the hospital. Jenny’s gaze darkened as she looked at Zayn’s handsome face reflected in the rearview mirror. She was clenching her hands so tightly and was not as weak as she sounded earlier. Was he avoiding her earlier? She would not allow it! Zayn sent Jenny to the hospital and saw her get checked and treated by the doctor. Under her constant pestering, he also coaxed her to sleep. His gaze was deep and distant as he looked at the woman sleeping peacefully on the hospital bed. The faint light reflected on Jenny's pale face. She slowly opened her eyes and saw Zayn’s worried face. Zayn still had her in his heart. "How did this happen?" "It’s just a minor problem from when I was abroad. I’ll be fine after some rest." Jenny felt more pleased the more nervous he was. Her hands unconsciously caressed Zayn's chiseled face. Her tone was soft and gentle as she said, "Zayn, it's so nice to have you here! I love you!" Zayn froze and turned his body slightly to avoid Jenny’s touch. When he spoke, his tone was duller, “You should learn to take care of yourself.” The word, "love", was too heavy. Even if he was not unclear about his emotions at the moment, he was clear about how he felt about Jenny. He was certainly not in love with her! Zayn also needed Jenny to know this. Jenny’s eyes felt heavy. Before she fell asleep, she asked Zayn to accompany her for the night. Zayn took out his phone to call his assistant and asked him to arrange for a nurse to watch over Jenny. He then turned around and left the room. The moment the door closed, the person on the hospital bed that should be sleeping peacefully suddenly opened her eyes… The next day, Jenny appeared in Zayn's office as if nothing had happened and did not mention a word about last night. "Zayn, thanks for taking care of me yesterday. I prepared breakfast for you." "Put it down. There’s a meeting this afternoon, so you should go over early to prepare." Unfortunately, Zayn did not go along with her loving act. He did not even lift his eyes to look at her before he asked her to leave. Jenny was a bit overwhelmed. She had known him for so many years, but it was the first time she was treated so coldly. In the next second, her eyes turned red. She bit her lip as she looked at Zayn in distress, without having the intention to leave. The two remained silent and fell into a stalemate for three minutes. Jenny looked at Zayn and knew he would not change his mind, so she reluctantly walked out of the President's Office as she looked back at him. The moment the door closed, her aggrieved and weak look instantly disappeared. Zayn wanted to back away from her, but she wanted the whole world to know that only she was qualified to stand by his side.
