I knocked once. Just once. Then I twisted the handle and walked into Reginald Blackwood’s office without waiting for permission.
The room smelled faintly of old leather and something sharper—polish, maybe. This was the kind of space that existed not for comfort but for intimidation. Dark wood panels climbed the walls like spiders. Every object was placed with intention. Nothing here was accidental.
Reginald sat at the head of the long table, posture relaxed, eyes fixed on the computer screen in front of him as if my presence meant nothing at all. Like I hadn’t just been summoned. Like he hadn’t dragged me here with a single message and a knock.
I cleared my throat.
“You called for me, Reginald?”
He didn’t answer right away. His fingers moved across the keyboard with a certain urgency, each click echoing far too loudly in the silence. Then, finally, he lifted his gaze.
“Yes,” he said calmly. “Have a seat, Miss Hart.” He gestured to the chai
