Chapter 11

My heart lurched, and I hurriedly snapped the laptop shut. Steve walked in slowly with his rosary beads looped around his right hand. He looked just as aloof and restrained as ever. He gave the laptop a brief glance and looked away. Thankfully, he didn't seem suspicious. "Let's talk," he said, sitting down across from me. I felt exhausted in a way I had never experienced before. I nodded and agreed, "Okay. Let's talk." There wasn't a trace of apology or explanation from him for what Isabel and Dorothy had done that night. Instead, he said coolly, "I don't want anything like you smashing the chapel to happen again. You're an adult. You need to learn to control your emotions." My hands, which were resting at my sides, clenched into tight fists. I shot back, "What about you? You hit me. You laid hands on me. Did you control your emotions?" Steve replied, "You were hurting Dorothy. I was just trying to get you to calm down." All the anger and resentment in my chest drained away
