Isabel's crying reached my ears. "Steve, my chest hurts so much… It feels like my myocarditis is flaring up again!"
"Did that spook you just now? I'll take you to the hospital right away," Steve said.
From beginning to end, Steve's gaze never once landed on my shoes, which were already soaked through with blood. He scooped Isabel up in his arms and hurried toward the car.
