Chapter 20
In the ambulance, paramedics worked fast to treat Nester's wounds and monitor his vital signs.
Sabrina sat off to the side. Her hands and coat were smeared with his warm, sticky blood. They carried a heavy, metallic scent.
She stared at Nester on the stretcher, whose face was deathly pale, and whose eyes were tightly closed. Her expression was unreadable, and only the tight line of her lips betrayed her barely noticeable tension.
Even in a coma, he kept murmuring incoherently, "I'm sorry, Sab… I'm sorry, baby… Don't go… Don't leave me.."
His voice was broken and filled with desperate despair.
Sabrina turned her head to look out the window at the nightscape speeding by. Her profile appeared particularly cold and hard under the flickering lights.
At the hospital, Nester was rushed straight into surgery. The lights above the operating room flicked on.
