Chapter 2

My surrounding coworkers screamed with envy and cheered for their love, while I was the only one who couldn't muster up a smile. Didn't Simon say that the company couldn't have office romances, especially not between a boss and a subordinate? Every time I wanted to go public, he always used the excuse of "The boss should lead by example" to stop me. For the sake of his career and dreams, I endured my grievances for seven years. However, just to save Tiffany's pride, he now agreed to her proposal in public and even arranged to propose to her again. As I watched them happily hug each other, I suddenly understood—it turned out all those reasons were just excuses. Simon just didn't love me. If he truly loved me, of course, he would have wanted everyone's blessing for us. I quietly put away the keys to the Rolls-Royce Phantom I had prepared. When Tiffany saw it, she laughed coldly. "And you still say you love Simon? You bought yourself a pretty wedding dress, but then you gave him a fake car key? Who are you to dare aim for someone as lofty as Simon?" Simon wore the watch Tiffany gave him and looked at me with disappointment. He seemed to say, "How could you be so apathetic about our seven years together?" Even my coworkers didn't know what to say. They tried to earnestly reason with me, saying, "Sienna, even if you didn't buy anything, that would've been better than giving a fake car key. This kind of lie is too easy to expose." A fake key? I smiled and didn't argue with them. They recognized it as a key to a Rolls-Royce but didn't believe I could afford it. Thus, they assumed it was a toy. They were right. After all, since when did women gift anything when they proposed? It was because Simon once saw a video and said that if he could drive one of those in his life, he could die with no regrets. So, I bought one as a gift to make his dream come true. But now, I no longer wanted to give it to him. When faced with Tiffany's mockery, I didn't bother to explain. I pulled out a resignation form, quickly filled it out, and turned to leave. Simon had never seen me act this way before, and so he quickly followed after me. After he saw no one around, he finally said to me, "Enough. I know today was unfair to you. "But I only gave the project to Tiffany, and you'll still get your money. Honestly speaking, you didn't really lose anything. "I rejected your resignation. Take some time off and think about it clearly. You're a 35-year-old woman. Where else can you go after leaving this company?" He looked at me, waiting for me to give in. But before I could answer, Tiffany called him, and he left. As I watched him walk away, I took out my phone and called my father. "Dad, cancel the project. I've resigned." On the other end, Dad exclaimed excitedly, "Okay! I'm glad you've finally given it some thought. I gave you the company, but you didn't want it. Instead, you insisted on suffering for a man…" I listened to him ramble for a bit before I hung up. I smiled bitterly, then I hailed a cab and went home.
