Chapter 5
Lorraine thought of the unfinished conversation she had with Justin that day, and she wanted to take this chance to confess to him. She said, "Justin, I have something to tell you."
Justin hummed in acknowledgement before he grabbed a chair and sat in front of her. Lorraine took her time as she said, "Justin, I won't marry Ambrose."
He said nothing. Clearly, he still had his doubts about that.
Lorraine sighed silently. How deeply had she been in love with Ambrose in the past for Justin to be so sure she would be hung up on that jerk?
"Actually, when my father asked me to choose someone to marry that day, the person I chose was you," she said, lifting her eyes to meet him.
Justin frowned. His reaction was a little unexpected.
"Lorraine, Ambrose is not a reliable person. But I still hope you won't do things out of spite when it comes to your marriage," he said.
"I'm not doing things out of spite," she replied.
"I wanted to tell you that day, but you left after you answered the call. I just didn't have time to tell you then. You've always been the one that I wanted to choose since the very beginning. This has nothing to do with Ambrose," she explained.
Justin looked a little upset as he stared at Lorraine. A moment later, he got up calmly, straightening the wrinkles on his expensive suit.
Then, he said with an icy expression, "You should calm down. Tell me what your decision is whenever you've thought it through."
He left after saying that, leaving Lorraine sitting on the chair, chuckling helplessly. She was already so honest with him, yet he still refused to believe her.
Summer came not long after Justin left. After she learned about what had happened in the room earlier, she dragged Lorraine to get a series of checkups done, cursing Ambrose to hell and back while she was at it. Roxanne was not exempted from her cursing.
"Here, have a sip of water and take a break." Lorraine handed her a glass of water before she comforted her softly, saying, "Don't be angry anymore. I'm fine, am I not?"
Summer, however, couldn't stomach the anger. She barked, "We can't just let those two scumbags off so easily!"
Lorraine's eyes flickered as she echoed, "Indeed, we can't just let them off the hook so easily."
Ambrose wanted to string her along and secure Frederick's funding, yet he also wanted to live happily ever after with Roxanne. He simply couldn't have everything his way in life.
"Give me my phone. I'm going to call my father," said Lorraine.
Delighted to hear that, Summer said, "You've finally figured it out, my dearest Lorraine,"
Lorraine dialed the number. But before she told Frederick what had happened at the hospital, he already knew.
"I've heard about it from Justin. I was just about to call you. How are you doing?" Frederick asked.
"I'm not injured, thanks to Justin," Lorraine replied.
Frederick spoke in a deep, heavy voice, "It's my fault that I misjudged his character. I didn't think Ambrose would treat you like this!"
"Dad, I have absolutely nothing to do with him anymore in the future. You should keep your distance from him as well."
"Have you really thought it through?" Frederick asked.
Deep down, he still thought the man Lorraine truly liked was Ambrose. But he couldn't be sure if her heart had been completely broken after what happened earlier. In any case, this was a good thing.
"Yes, I have. I don't have anything to do with him from now on," Lorraine replied.
"Alright. I'll end my collaboration with him right away."
"Thank you, Dad," said Lorraine. It was after she hung up the call that she breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, Frederick didn't press any further, and he would agree with any terms she requested.
She didn't want her father to repeat the history and ended up dying with no sign of his body ever recovered. It was perfect for her to take this chance to keep their distance from Ambrose.
Three days later, Lorraine was discharged from the hospital and returned home. Frederick happened to be back from his business trip as well.
Summer drove to the hospital to pick her up.
Frederick's students learned that she was going to be discharged, so they had prepared presents for her in advance. Justin, whom she hadn't met for a few days, had someone bring a limited edition purse to her as well.
The two of them hadn't contacted each other at all in the past few days. But on the day Lorraine left the hospital, she posted on Instagram, and for the first time, Justin liked the post.
After she got home, Ambrose, whom she hadn't seen for a few days, suddenly showed up to visit her. Summer didn't bother to play nice and stopped him at the entrance. She hissed, "Why are you here? You're not welcome here!"
There was not a trace of the arrogance he once had on his face. He was incredibly humble as he said, "It was wrong of me to do whatever I did before. Let me go in and apologize to Lorraine."
Summer didn't budge at all. She growled, "Don't even think about it. You won't be seeing Lorraine ever again!"
"Summer!" Ambrose's face darkened, and he continued while gritting his teeth, "This has nothing to do with you, so why must you give me a hard time?"
"You've harmed Lorraine, which means you've crossed me. How could this have nothing to do with me?" Summer replied.
Ambrose shoved her aside and said, "Get out of the way. I'm going in to meet Professor Neale."
"Get the hell out of here!" Summer shouted. But she was no match for him at all and was easily pushed out of the way by him.
She wanted to call out, knowing that she couldn't stop him, when he suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"Professor Neale," said Ambrose.
Frederick looked at him with an icy gaze and ordered him to leave without hesitation. He said, "Just go."
Panicked, Ambrose pleaded, "Professor Neale, can you give me a chance to explain?"
"You're my student. I don't spell everything out, but you should know it very well deep down. You've hurt my daughter, so don't expect to get any help from me," said Frederick.
He had his hands behind his back, looking away. He didn't even want to glance at Ambrose at all at this moment.
"Professor Neale, I'm not here because of your funding today. I really want to apologize to Lorraine sincerely," Ambrose explained.
"An apology is not necessary. Just tell your girlfriend to leave Lorraine alone, and that would be enough," said Frederick.
"She's not my girlfriend," Ambrose explained in a panic, his face as white as a sheet.
Frederick sneered, and he couldn't help but clench his fists.
"Why did you force Lorraine to give her a blood transfusion, then? You know Lorraine's health is not great. It's a big deal in our family whenever she gets a small bruise. Still, you forced her to give her blood to your girlfriend!" he snapped.
Colors drained from Ambrose's face as he pursed his lips. Clearly, he had no clue how to argue his way out of that.
Frederick stopped looking at him. He simply waved his hands in disgust and said, "Just leave. Don't come to my home again in the future."
Ambrose gritted his teeth, and his gaze became vicious.
"You'd better not regret this, Professor Neale," he said before he spun on his heels and left without looking back.
"What a jerk," Frederick cursed under his breath as he watched him leave.
"Don't be angry, Mr. Neale. It's not worth it for a man like him. I'm going to head upstairs to see Lorraine," said Summer.
It was only then that Frederick's expression eased up, and he said with a nod, "Go ahead. Tell Lorraine to cheer up."
Lorraine was sitting on the balcony as she watched Ambrose drive off. Footsteps echoed behind her as Summer approached her.
Feeling disappointed, Summer said, "What a pity. I wanted to throw a bucket of water in his face."
Lorraine laughed and replied, "What a waste of water if you did that."
Summer stifled a laugh before she said, "Your father tore him a new one earlier. I saw that he was so angry that his face was pale when he left."
"What did he say to my father?" Lorraine asked.
She had a guard up. Based on her understanding of him, he absolutely wouldn't just sit idly by.
"He just apologized. He even put on airs and threatened your father. That jerk told him he'd better not regret this before he left," Summer explained.
