Whenever a palace servant died, the body was always removed and dealt with the same day. That meant the first possibility was out. That left the second. There were many kinds of corpses. Zombies were the kind that turned rigid after death, and those who died without stiffening were revenants. Revenants were typically the newly dead, who somehow came back to "life". As they were so freshly dead, their appearances didn't differ much from the living and made them the easiest to overlook. The Royal Palace was protected by dragon energy. For a revenant to appear even under such circumstances could only mean that the royal city's vigor had begun to decay. Shannon had her suspicions but made no move to help Serena. Just from reading the latter's face, it was clear that she wasn't innocent.
