Chapter 2172
The man held out a finely crafted velvet box to Louise. A beautifully polished emerald bangle lay in it.
He said, "This emerald bangle may not be the finest in the world, but it's been passed down from my great-grandmother's lineage. My elder brother and I each inherited one. His is with my sister-in-law.
"I wish to give mine to you…"
Louise didn't take the box right away. She simply looked at him and asked, "Are you sure you want to marry me?"
The man, Edmund Hastings, solemnly nodded. "I do!"
"Even if I'm not human? Does it not matter to you?"
Edmund's expression didn't waver. "I knew you weren't human the day you saved me in the mountains. I admire you, and it has nothing to do with whether you're human or a demon."
Hearing this, Louise picked up the emerald bangle and let it roll gently in her palm. Then, her eyes sharpened, and waves of supernatural energy radiated from her body.
Without warning, she transformed into demon form right before his eyes.
Her long black hair turned into flowing silver, while her pupils became those of a fox. Behind her, nine magnificent tails unfurled in an eerie, seductive manner.
It was the first time Edmud had seen her in her demon form, and he froze.
"Even like this, do you still want to marry me?" Louise stared at him and repeated her question. "Think carefully. I'll give you just one chance."
After all, Edmund was just human. Faced with the fox demon before him, his eyes flickered with fear.
Though he tried to suppress it, his hand couldn't help but tremble as he slowly reached out toward the emerald bangle in Louise's hand.
Assuming he meant to take back the heirloom, a flash of mockery flickered in Louise's eyes as she handed it toward him.
To her surprise, he took hold of the bangle and grasped her wrist.
With his hands still shaking uncontrollably, he firmly and with effort, slid the emerald bangle onto her wrist.
Then, he looked up at her with a steady and unwavering gaze, announcing, "I want to marry you!"
Louise blinked in surprise, but she still didn't say yes. "I am the Nine-Tailed Ruler of Foxes. The Ruler of Foxes cannot be given in marriage. If you wish to be with me, it must be I who marries you."
For a noble family of the ancient world, a man joining his wife's household through a matrilocal arrangement was utterly scandalous. Judging by his finely tailored robes, he clearly came from wealth and status.
Sure enough, Edmund fell silent after hearing her words. He pondered briefly before saying, "That's fine.
"My elder brother is responsible for the family's legacy and lineage. If I marry into your household, it won't affect my family either. I'll just have to seek permission from them."
Louise just looked him in the eye. "And if they refuse? What will you do?"
Edmund chuckled. His eyes were warm, and his tone was gentle as he said, "Then that's that. I'll fake my death and live with you here in the mountains, but that would mean I might not bring many wedding gifts.
"There might just be some silver and this mountain, along with the villa hidden in it. Would you mind?"
Both Louise and Shannon were utterly speechless.
In the end, Louise and Edmund did become husband and wife.
Just as Edmund had predicted, his parents could not accept his matrilocal marriage, much less marrying a fox demon. Only his brother and sister-in-law came to bless the couple at their wedding.
In her divine soul state, Shannon watched as Louise and Edmund tied a knot under the witness of the heavens. She watched as the powerful Louise and scholarly Edmund began leading a simple, ordinary life.
Then, she witnessed Louise's eyes gradually soften with love, until they welcomed their first child into the world.
