"Xavier, your body can't handle sleeping on the couch," Edith said, looking at him with sympathy. "Must you both live so frugally? I gave you a card. You should use it!"
Sitting upright, Xavier reassured her, "Don't worry, Grandma. We're not short on money. It's just that she won't let me sleep upstairs."
"Why not?"
Edith looked genuinely baffled. "You're still recovering from your injury. She should at least let you sleep in a proper bed!"
Xavier stayed calm, even though he spotted Lily upstairs out of the corner of his eye.
"There's only one bed," he said. "And I'm a man, so I should let her have it."
Edith's sympathy for Xavier grew even more. "Our family owns so many properties. You could've picked any one of them, and it'd be much more spacious than this place. You'd both have your own floors if you wanted!"
