Chapter 3
After cleaning up the kitchen, Chase went upstairs to his room to rest. When he opened his bedroom door, he saw Lucian lying on his bed, wearing his pajamas. Serena sat beside him, applying medicine to his skin.
When she saw Chase enter, she ordered, "You'll sleep in the guest room tonight."
Chase's voice was strained. "This is my room."
Serena replied coldly, "Lucian needs the best room. Since you threw boiling soup at him, giving up your room is the least you can do as an apology."
She had already convicted him.
Chase let out a bitter laugh. "So, him wearing my clothes is part of the apology, too?"
Serena snapped impatiently, "I bought those pajamas in the first place! Are you really going to nitpick over a piece of clothing? You just don't want Lucian in this house and want to drive him away, don't you?"
She gave a cold laugh. "Well, I'm making him stay! He'll be living here every single day!"
Lucian tugged at her arm gently. "Don't be like this."
Serena's voice softened as she spoke to him. "Don't worry about it. He's had this coming for a long time."
Chase watched Serena lean closer to Lucian as he sat on the bed, and the scene felt like a knife twisting in his heart. At that moment, he was utterly exhausted and didn't want to say another word.
"Chase, did you hear me?"
He nodded numbly. "Fine."
Serena seemed caught off guard. "What did you say?"
Chase said flatly, "I'll just grab some clothes to change into."
He walked into the walk-in closet. Serena followed him in, her tone somewhat defensive as she said, "Lucian is our guest, and besides, you throwing soup at him was wrong in the first place."
Chase didn't react and just quietly hummed in acknowledgment.
Serena flew into a rage. "Oh, so now you're giving me the silent treatment? I can't stand it when you act all pitiful like this, waiting for someone to comfort you!"
She stormed out and sat on the bed, chatting loudly and shamelessly with Lucian. "Where should we go tomorrow? Want to visit our old campus?
"It's been five years. I wonder if that tabby cat we used to feed is still there."
After Chase finished packing his clothes, he noticed a pair of sapphire cufflinks displayed in the glass case as he walked out. They were the birthday gift Serena had bought him after driving Myles away.
She had solemnly promised that she would never hurt him again. If she ever forgot, he could show her these cufflinks, and she would change her ways.
However, that promise had been broken again and again since Lucian's return. If he brought out the cufflinks now, it would probably just humiliate himself further.
Chase took out the two cufflinks and held them in his palm. As he passed the bedroom, he saw Lucian leaning close to Serena's ear while she had one hand on his shoulder. They were locked in what looked like a deep kiss.
He ignored the sharp, unwelcome pain in his chest and quietly walked away. He threw the cufflinks into the trash and went into the guest room.
