It was raining again—a chilly autumn rain that cut straight to the bone. Emma walked alone through the cold neon-lit streets, no umbrella, soaked through.
All she could think was, she'd gotten too greedy. Love, once confirmed, didn’t need to be perfect; a little flaw didn’t mean failure. People always sigh a few times before the final curtain, don't they?
"Emma!" David sprinted over, grabbing hold of her trembling body. "Where the hell did you go? I’ve been losing my mind looking for you!"
"David..." Emma leaned against his shoulder, weakly. "I’m sorry... I dragged you into this..."
"Stop saying crap like that! Emma! Emma!!!"
On the ER floor, a mess of wet tire tracks and hurried footprints crisscrossed in every direction—
"Doctor! Please—help her!"
"What happened? She's passed out from pregnancy-induced hypertension. Her heart and lungs are barely functioning!"
"Please—she can't just die like this!"
"Yeah, no kidding! 26 weeks pregnant, get the OB/GYN head here now!"
