William let out a cold snort, then shot a look at Lucas. "Heard you've been talking crap outside, saying Elsie's ugly?"
Lucas nearly jumped to his feet, looking like he was about to swear on his life. "Who said that? That’s total BS! Come on, injustice in broad daylight! I might call myself ugly but I’d never say that about Elsie!"
"If someone like her counts as ugly, I’d better get my eyes checked."
"You should probably get your brain checked instead."
William took a sip of whiskey—smooth at first, then searing as it hit his throat, with a lingering aftertaste of oaky fruitiness.
Man, he was losing it. Now even the damn whiskey reminded him of Elsie.
