The fire in William’s eyes got snuffed out in a flash, like someone dumped a blanket of snow over it—quiet, cold, but underneath, the heat simmered on, enough to burn.
“It’s all on me,” he said lowly, stepping closer to Elsie, gently cupping her face. “We’ve still got a lifetime ahead of us, Elsie. Let me make things right. Please?”
“What’s the point in that?” she stared back, calm but firm. “I still had to live through those three years. If there were a time machine, sure, maybe I’d say yes.”
She looked at him hard. “But there isn’t one, is there?”
It took effort, but she eventually pushed his hands away.
“When things were a mess between you and Grace, I never went and picked a fight with her. So don’t go making things hard for Henry either.”
