Chapter 5 Sending Her to the Police Station
Seeing the man's insouciant expression and hearing his unkind words, Selena lowered her eyes to hide the sorrow within them.
What exactly is Christopher's heart made of? I had always been true to him throughout our five years of love and three years of marriage. Why is he so cruel to me?
Three years ago, he made her leave the marriage with nothing, and now, three years later, he wanted to send her to the police station upon their first encounter without even hearing her side of the story.
Men are the most heartless creatures in this world, and Christopher is the best of the best among them.
Was I blind? How could I have fallen in love with such a cold-blooded, heartless, and ungrateful man back then?
Selena stubbornly refused to apologize, so she was taken to the police station by the officers in the end.
A police officer was questioning her in a professional manner when her phone rang with Zachary's call. As soon as she answered it, Zachary's frustrated voice came through the receiver. "Selena, where the hell are you? Didn't I tell you to wait in the lounge?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Quinn!" she apologized repeatedly. "Something cropped up. I'm currently at the police station."
"What? The police station? How did you end up there?"
"Um... Well..." Selena wasn't sure what to say. I can't possibly tell Zachary that I encountered the homewrecker who ruined my marriage and, in a moment of anger, got into a conflict that led to my ex-husband taking me to the police station, can I?
Zachary grew impatient at her stammering. "Since you like staying at the police station so much, stay there, then. I don't want you as my assistant anymore. I'm calling Bryan right away!"
With that, all she could hear on the phone were beeps as Zachary hung up. Her heart sank. So not only have I gotten myself into trouble with the law but also got fired?
Noticing her pale face, a police officer felt some sympathy for her and reminded her kindly, "Miss, how did you manage to offend these people? One is Mr. Shurmer's beloved daughter, and the other is the business tycoon Christopher Morris. Why would you provoke them? It'd be wiser to apologize and let this matter go. Oh, right. I have Mr. Morris' phone number here. Why don't you give him a call and something to placate him?"
Selena half-smiled and answered, "Thank you, sir. I've lost my job and have nowhere to go now. Being locked up here with food and a place to stay actually gives me some time to recollect myself. I won't need to apologize!"
Sighing, the police officer left upon comprehending that he wouldn't be able to convince her. Meanwhile, Selena knew that Christopher wouldn't let her off easily, so she decided to cross the bridge when she got to it. For now, she'd just wait and see what tricks he had up his sleeve.
She refused to believe that the man was really that powerful, so much so that he could do everything he desired.
As thoughts raced through her mind, heavy footsteps were heard approaching the door. Shortly after, the door was pushed open, and an enraged Zachary appeared at the doorway.
"Selena Yates, you sure have guts, huh!"
"Mr. Quinn!" Selena called out softly.
"I've never seen an assistant like you, an utterly useless troublemaker!" he admonished furiously. However, as he took in her sorry state, he suddenly stopped talking.
"What exactly happened? How in the world did you end up like this?" he probed.
"It's nothing. I just got drenched in wine by someone."
"Who did it?" Zachary questioned through gritted teeth.
"A stranger!"
"You're truly bringing me honor, huh? Trust you to let yourself be bullied like this!" He picked up his phone and made a call. "Send two people my way. My assistant has been bullied. Go and teach the culprits a lesson!"
"Mr. Quinn! That person is in the hospital now. There's no need to teach her a lesson anymore! Now, she's the one who wants to teach me one!"
"Well done!" Zachary's face instantly lit up. "Don't worry. No one will dare to mess with you when I'm around. Get up and come with me!"
"We're leaving?"
"Would you rather stay here instead?" he asked rhetorically while turning to leave. After a brief hesitation, Selena then stood up and followed him out.
No one stopped her, and she managed to follow Zachary out of the police station without any obstacles. When they reached the parking lot, he turned around unexpectedly and burst into laughter while facing her.
