That face, still carrying the traces of youth, was unmistakably Arabella's.
It felt as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over Heidi's head. The chill spread from her heart down to her limbs, leaving her numb.
She continued flipping through the remaining photos.
Most of them were pictures of the two of them together—at the hospital, in the courtyard of the Cannol residence, at the aquarium, at the amusement park.
In the photos, Maverick grew from a boy into a young man, his features becoming sharper and more defined as the years went by. Yet, whenever he looked at Arabella, there was always a warmth in his eyes, something that softened those edges.
Arabella, too, had changed. From a frail, sickly little girl, she had grown into a delicate, pretty young woman. The only thing that didn't change was the way she looked at him.
Heidi's eyes lingered on the last photo. It was from Maverick's police academy graduation. He looked sharp and confident in his crisp uniform.
