Heidi could see the barbs hidden behind that smile.
"I'm fine," she coolly replied.
Maverick poured Arabella a cup of warm milk. "Next time, just have the driver bring things over. It's cold out. Don't run around."
Arabella cradled the cup and obediently nodded. "Got it. Are you two heading out?"
"Yes," Maverick replied. "I'm taking Heidi to buy a ring."
Arabelle's gaze dropped at once to Heidi's ring finger. "Heidi, did you lose your wedding ring?"
Ronald frowned.
In a family like the Cadwells, where rules and appearances mattered, losing a wedding ring was seen as disrespectful to the marriage and a bad omen.
Margaret added softly, almost as an afterthought, "Oh dear, how careless. It was engraved too. There's only that one pair in the world."
