Chapter 46
As Heidi walked by the pediatric outpatient clinic, a mother wheeled a stroller past her. Inside, a rosy-cheeked baby babbled happily, his tiny hands waving in the air.
Heidi's gaze lingered on those chubby little hands, and for a moment, her mind drifted.
What if she had a child too?
But the thought had barely surfaced before she pushed it firmly away.
"I want the balloon…" a sobbing voice echoed.
"Hey! Stop running!"
A little boy in a down jacket suddenly darted out. Not watching where he was going, he crashed straight into Heidi's legs.
Heidi was already lightheaded, and when combined with the impact, she stumbled. Her heels twisted beneath her, and she lost her balance, tilting backward.

"Careful," the man's voice above her was gentle and calm.
With her heart still racing, Heidi steadied herself and looked up.
