Barely ten minutes after hanging up, Heidi received a PDF via email. She went to the study and connected to the printer. The few sheets of paper didn't feel heavy at all. She signed her name in the right column, expecting to burst into tears. She'd prepared napkins, but to her surprise, she didn't shed a tear. Her hand was steady, and her mind was calm. She reckoned that this was how things should be. At 3:00 pm, Maverick sent her a text. "What do you want to eat? I'll leave early to buy groceries." Heidi typed only two words back. "Whatever works."
