Chapter 8

Ron impatiently said, “I got it. Here is not a good place to park. I’ll wait for you in front.” “Okay.” Yvonne pushed open the car door and walked into the shop in her stilettos. She immediately saw Maeve. “I didn’t expect that it was really you!” “Welcome.” When Maeve saw Yvonne, she was initially startled, but she immediately greeted her with a smile. “What a coincidence. I didn’t expect to see you here. Are you here to shop? There are some new designs in our shop today, and they are very suitable for you. Do you want to try anything on?” Maeve hated Yvonne, but she did not want to lose this job. It had not been easy for her to get it. “It looks like your three-year stint in jail wasn’t in vain. You finally learned to stay humble and be sensible.” When Yvonne saw that Maeve pleased her, she felt very happy. Maeve was not like this in the past. She used to rely on her status as the daughter of the Lawson family. She always looked noble, prideful, and arrogant. She looked very disgusting, but now, Yvonne had successfully stepped on her. Maeve’s expression remained unchanged, and she flashed a professional smile. “I used to be ignorant. You also changed a lot. Your skin looks better, and your figure is more beautiful.” “Wow! I didn’t expect to hear such kind words from you.” Yvonne sized Maeve up in disbelief. Did Maeve really change her character after going through the tough life, or was she just pretending? Yvonne looked at Maeve for a while, but she was unable to tell. Maeve smiled faintly and said, “Of course. I really mean what I say. Let’s not talk about me. Do you want clothes, shoes, or bags? A batch of new designs is up today. This pair of shoes suits you.” Maeve casually took the most expensive pair of high heels from the rack. “They are really nice, but I wonder if they fit.” Yvonne sat down, leaned into the couch, and raised her eyebrows like an arrogant peacock. “You’ll know after you try it on.” Maeve immediately squatted down and put the shoes on her. “There’s only one pair of every size, so nobody will have the same pair as yours. These shoes also match your skin tone. It’s like it was tailor-made for you. 6800 dollars is quite a steep price, so ordinary people can’t afford to buy it. Even if they can, they wouldn’t be able to stand out like you.” Maeve kept flattering Yvonne, and her tone was even intentionally filled with envy. She knew that Yvonne liked to be flattered. “I’m buying these shoes.” Yvonne did not know if it was because of Maeve, but she felt like a very important customer, and she had never felt that way before. In the end, she arrogantly took out a black card. “I’ll pay by card. This is Ron’s card. He has a lot of money, and I can just spend it however I want.” Maeve took the black card. “Do you want a dress to go with the shoes? This is the newest design.” Without giving Yvonne a chance to reject, Maeve held up a dress. In the end, Yvonne bought a pair of shoes and two sets of clothing. She paid 13000 dollars by card. When she was making the payment, she took out her phone and took a selfie. She intentionally captured a photo of Maeve in uniform and posted it to her Instagram. She purposely hid this post from Ron. “Seriously, you didn’t ask us out for a meal after you got released. You also didn’t tell us you started working as a shop assistant. I’ll make an Instagram post for you so that everyone will come and support you. Anyway, I’m sure they need to buy clothes, shoes, and bags too. We are all friends. We should bring you business and let you earn more, shouldn’t we?” “Thank you.” Maeve flashed a decent smile. Those ladies in the upper social class called each other best friends on the surface, but they actually disagreed on many things. They competed against each other and disliked each other, but their attitudes toward Maeve were an unprecedented constant. They did not want the best for her, and all of them were waiting for her to get humiliated. Maeve just wanted to work and earn money now. She did not care what other people thought of her. She sold clothes, and she earned money by working hard. She did not steal, and she did not do anything that harmed others. After her calculations, she was sure that she had earned three hundred dollars from commission alone today. If she performed well, she could become a permanent employee very soon, and her basic salary would become higher. Money was essential. Once she found her grandmother, she would need to spend more money. She had to earn more and save up more quickly. Maeve continued organizing the clothes. She did not notice that a luxury fleet was parked on the road outside the display window. Liam saw Maeve, and he immediately informed Matthew. Matthew was sitting in the back seat while flipping through a contract. “Mr. Stevens, that looks like Mrs. Stevens.” Matthew subconsciously ducked. When he realized that the car windows were heavily tinted, ensuring that no one could peer inside, he calmly sat up straight again. “Where is she?” He followed Liam’s gaze and immediately saw Maeve. He also saw Yvonne, who was emerging from the shop with a few shopping bags. Liam said worriedly, “It looks like Mrs. Stevens is selling clothes in that boutique. I wonder if Yvonne Lynch just bullied her.” “Do you have too much free time? Is this something that you need to worry about?” Matthew narrowed his eyes slightly, and he exuded coldness. Liam immediately shut up. Matthew stared at Maeve with his sharp black eyes, and he said in a gloomy tone, “Can’t you see that? She was not bullied by Yvonne. She was attracted by money.” She would rather submit to the mistress than use the money in his card. What was this woman doing? Matthew’s expression darkened. He was unhappy. Maeve clocked off work at 10 p.m., and she arrived home sometime after that. When she stepped into the house, the living room was lit. She immediately saw Matthew, who was sitting on the couch with a dark expression. He indifferently asked her, “Why are you back so late?” Maeve closed the door and changed into slippers as she said, “I found a job today, and I just clocked off work. When did you come back?” It was good that she was honest! Matthew, who had been back for four hours, said in a profound tone, “I just got back.” “Why didn’t you tell me? If I knew that you were coming back today, I would have come back early to buy groceries and make dinner.” Maeve kept rambling. Her voice was tender, which instantly made the cold home warmer. Matthew’s expression improved. “My job is to serve Mr. Stevens. I work according to his schedule, and my working hours are not fixed, so I couldn’t inform you ahead of time. What type of job did you get?” “I’m a sales assistant for a women’s clothing shop. Today was my first day, and I managed to close some sales. I got two hundred dollars for my commission.” Maeve sounded happy. “I spent a lot of time out of the workforce, and I was worried that I’d be too disconnected from society to do anything well. After today, I realized that it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. The beginning is always difficult. If I’m willing to learn and work hard, I’ll keep improving.” “Is that so?” Matthew pursed his lips. She was over the moon because she received a measly two hundred dollars? “Oh yeah, have you had your dinner yet?” Maeve changed the topic. “Not yet.” He had turned down the banquet and came back very early. Unexpectedly, she came back only after 10 p.m. The incident that occurred in the restaurant some time ago was a huge deal. She was a single woman, and yet, she was coming home so late. Was she not afraid of running into danger on her way back?
