Julian said lazily, but when he saw Lucas’s face darken like a storm cloud, clearly biting down the frustration, he let out a low chuckle and changed his tone. “Alright, tell you what. Since we’re both from Cloudmere, I’ll be nice—give you the standard market rate. Just remember to wire the money, Mr. Bennett.”
He looked all benevolent and righteous, like some kind of modern-day saint tossing breadcrumbs.
Lucas seriously looked like he was about to pop a blood vessel.
Too bad he couldn’t say a word—he needed Julian’s damn jet, after all.
Claire, sitting nearby, kept a straight face, pretending she wasn’t part of this awkward exchange.
She thought to herself: Lucas probably hasn't swallowed this much humiliation in his whole life. Normally, he’d just walk away and leave everyone in the dust.
Lucas glanced her way, his look saying loud and clear: I’m doing this for you
