Chapter 10
Nathan stood on the shore, silent. His face was drawn, and his breath heavy with alcohol.
It had been a month since Joyce's incident. The search area had doubled, but there was still no news. Today was the last day.
"Mr. Gray!" A rescue team member was running toward him. Hope flickered in his chest.
"We just pulled up a pair of shackles. We're not sure if they belonged to Ms. Campbell."
They were the same ones Nathan had once locked on her wrist himself, now snapped apart.
With that, his last sliver of hope collapsed. He took them, tears falling freely now. He turned toward the spot where she had gone over and dropped down to his knees.
He had lost her for good.
