Chapter 14
Kylie's words rendered Lana speechless.
She really wanted to get mad, but her fear of Kylie tattling to Jonathan behind her back left her with no choice but to endure it.
It was because she knew that he definitely wanted Isaac's help. Therefore, she couldn't afford to offend Kylie right now.
With that thought in mind, she gritted her teeth and said haltingly, "Okay! Since you have something to do, let's talk about it again some other day."
"Sure!" Kylie replied cheerily before hanging up, but her smile immediately vanished.
Of course, she didn't actually have anything to do tonight. She simply didn't want to go home.
Did Lana think that as long as she apologized—however reluctant it was—Kylie would eagerly sprint back home just like that?
Kylie was also aware that Jonathan wanted to invite her and Isaac back for dinner because he had something to ask of Isaac.
If that weren't the case, he wouldn't have been so anxious to get Lana to apologize to her, which made Kylie a little sad.
After calming herself down, she left the balcony and entered Rachel's room.
As soon as she entered the room, she stopped moving at the sight of Isaac sitting by Rachel's bedside.
Isaac's eyebrows twitched minutely when he saw her, but he remained emotionless and turned away two seconds later.
She closed the door before walking quietly over to the couch and sitting on it.
The two of them silently watched over Rachel, neither of them saying a word the entire time.
When Rachel woke up and saw such a harmonious scene, she couldn't help but smile, feeling comforted.
However, the moment she recalled that Kylie and Isaac had almost gotten divorced today, she started feeling upset again.
"You're awake, Grandma," said Isaac.
Kylie immediately rose from the couch at those words and walked over to the bed.
"Rachel," she said gently.
Rachel called both their names in turn before reaching out toward them, and they each held onto one of her hands.
"What's wrong, Grandma? Do you have any instructions for us?" asked Kylie.
Rachel's voice still sounded rather frail as she replied, "You two should move back to the Grant residence and stay here from today onward!"
Kylie and Isaac both stiffened at the same time.
Move back to the Grant residence?
Rachel had noticed their strange reactions. Her eyes gleamed, and she pressed forward determinedly. "This asthma attack got me thinking, you see. I'm already at such an age, and I don't know how many years I have left in me.
"So, I'm hoping that the two of you will be able to spend more time with an old woman like me. I can even help you take care of your children while I'm still strong and healthy."
Kylie flinched subtly.
Children?
She snorted inwardly.
It was likely that nobody would believe her if she said it aloud, but she and Isaac hadn't even exchanged a kiss in all the time they'd been married, much less gotten intimate with each other.
Smoothening her expression, she replied, "Please don't say such ominous things, Grandma. You'll definitely live to a ripe old age."
Rachel smiled and nodded, "Alright. I won't talk about it anymore. Then, will you two also promise me that you'll move back here? Please?"
Kylie said nothing. Given her current relationship with Isaac, it wasn't the best idea for them to move back and live together in the Grant residence.
However, right at that moment, Isaac suddenly took it upon himself to answer Rachel's question. "Okay."
She glanced sideways at him, and he met her gaze evenly.
Successfully reading the silent message in his eyes, she looked away and smiled at Rachel. "Okay, we'll move back and stay here."
Since the reason they were no longer getting divorced was out of concern for Rachel's health, then Rachel should naturally be their top priority.
Rachel immediately smiled with relief. "Good."
…
Isaac and Kylie returned to Fuschia Manor in the afternoon to pack their things.
She felt inexplicably conflicted when she thought that she was about to be living with Isaac in the Grant residence.
Retiring to her bedroom early that night, she walked into the cloakroom and grabbed a set of casual clothes to change into.
However, just as she was about to put the clothes on, the cloakroom door was slid open with a swish.
The first thing Isaac saw upon opening the cloakroom door was skin so pale that it almost seemed to glow, but that stretch of pale skin was covered in numerous scratches and abrasions.
His pupils dilated in shock at the sight of those injuries.
Were these… the injuries she had received from jumping out of the cab before?
He was just about to speak when his gaze suddenly landed on the scar on Kylie's lower back, so long that it spanned half her waist.
Kylie, whose back had been to the entrance of the cloakroom, was startled to hear the noise coming from behind her and quickly pulled down her shirt.
She frowned slightly when she turned and saw Isaac standing behind her.
It was hard to tell what he was thinking as he asked aloud, "What… What's with that scar on your lower back?"
Kylie's expression changed slightly upon hearing his question, the memory of that shocking scene from back then surfacing in her mind against her will.
Amid a raging fire, a young Kylie was holding onto a boy of her age lying in a pool of blood, desperately attempting to drag him outward.
"Wake up! Don't fall asleep now! You have to hang in there!" she yelled.
The boy's head was covered in blood, and he was barely breathing. "R-Run…"
Kylie didn't say anything else, but she continued to do her best to drag him toward the outside.
Just then, there was a loud bang, and a wooden beam fell from the roof.
It landed right on her lower back, causing her to scream.
She abruptly snapped out of her thoughts, her forehead was covered in cold sweat.
Isaac's expression shifted minutely at the sight of her strange expression.
Kylie didn't say a word to him. Instead, she turned, walked out of the cloakroom, and headed straight into the bathroom.
She then used a wet towel to wipe her face before wiping down the rest of her body.
The abrasions on her body covered a large surface area, so the doctor had repeatedly instructed her to keep her injuries away from water.
After cleaning up, she left the bathroom and dug out some clean pillows and a blanket from the closet, then walked over to the couch.
Since she and Isaac had already decided on divorce, it wouldn't be appropriate for them to sleep in the same bed any longer.
Isaac's eyebrows rose in surprise at the sight, but he was quite satisfied with her behavior.
As such, he also went to bed with peace of mind.
…
The weather was great the next day, with clear skies for miles around.
Kylie was sitting in Isaac's car, the two of them currently making their way to the Murphy residence.
At noon today, Jonathan had called Kylie again and asked her to bring Isaac back to the Murphy residence for dinner together.
Rachel had coincidentally been sitting next to her at that time and heard what Jonathan said. So, Rachel had immediately called Isaac and asked him to accompany Kylie back to the Murphy residence for dinner.
…
When they arrived at the Murphy residence, Jonathan and Lana immediately showed incredibly sincere smiles upon seeing Isaac and hurriedly stepped forward to welcome him.
The household staff also very discerningly served up the best drink they had available for Isaac.
Kylie had only just sat down when Lana spoke up. "Come with me, Kylie. I have something to say to you."
Kylie knew that Lana was making an excuse to give Isaac and Jonathan space to speak privately. After a momentary silence, she stood up and followed Lana to the balcony on the second floor.
As soon as Lana closed the balcony door, she instantly dropped her facade. "You've certainly gotten bold nowadays, Kylie! To think you've actually learned to tattle!"
