Chapter 13 Dishonesty

The freezing aura made Tiffany shudder. She even felt that if Mortimer knew of her pregnancy, he would destroy both her and her children without hesitation. She bit her tongue hard, and the faint taste of blood filled her mouth before she spoke with much difficulty. “Don’t you worry. I’ve never had that intention. You don’t have to go to such lengths to threaten me.” “Words must be spoken clearly. Otherwise, you might get lucky, and wouldn’t that be troublesome for me?” Tiffany’s body seemed to be pierced through by Mortimer’s icy gaze. She suppressed the fear in her heart and said, “As long as you agree to divorce me, I will walk away without turning back.” Mortimer had long lost his desire to dig into other people, but he thought that Tiffany’s stubborn stance, despite her obvious fear, was intriguing. He reached for Tiffany, his fingers covered in light calluses, and lifted her chin. “Why are you so agitated? Could it be that you’ve fallen for me?” “How is that possible?” Tiffany was so angry that she clenched her jaw. “Even if the Hudson River started flowing backward, I would never fall for someone like you!” “That’s good.” Mortimer released her. “Mother is not in good health, and there are many matters to be settled in the company. I cannot divorce you for the time being. Hence, I advise you to stay on the down low and refrain from causing trouble for me.” Tiffany didn’t know how long Mortimer wanted her to wait and was a little anxious. If it was dragged out for too long, she would not be able to conceal her pregnancy. “When will you be able to divorce me?” she asked. “Are you in a rush?” Mortimer’s eyes narrowed. His gaze pierced through Tiffany’s eyes as if he could see through her deepest secrets. Tiffany dug her nails into her palms, keeping her breaths steady. “Not really. I was just thinking that since we both hate each other, it would benefit us to separate soon.” “Oh?” Mortimer’s tone carried a hint of interest. “You’re very honest.” “I’m used to speaking my mind.” Tiffany gently blinked her eyes. “Perhaps there are too many superficial people around you, which is why you’re so used to flattery.” These words were obviously sarcastic. Mortimer smiled and chuckled. “Do you mean to say that you’re sincere? I remember you dressing up to accompany a man to dinner last night.” “That was for business purposes,” Tiffany shot back. “Haven’t you had instances where you had to compromise for the sake of work?” “No,” Mortimer said with no hesitation. His identity and status guaranteed that he would always be in the more favorable position. He only needed to lift a finger and countless people would want to please him. Pigs would fly before he would ever bow to someone else. Tiffany was speechless. She had no common topics to talk about with this man. Half an hour later, the car was parked at the entrance of the villa. When Tiffany got out of the car, she accidentally stepped on a cobblestone. The soles of her high heels were shaky, making her lose her balance, and she fell right into Mortimer’s arms. This was the first time that she and Mortimer had been this close. She could smell the faint scent of his cologne and feel his hand around her waist. The heat from his body scorched her. She was supposed to push him away immediately, but she had frozen in place. She even wanted to greedily savor this moment of warmth. Mortimer chuckled next to her ears. “Didn’t you just say that you would never fall for me? But now you’ve fallen right into my arms.” “That… There is no such thing!” A red blush bloomed on Tiffany’s cheek, spreading down her neck. She wrestled out of Mortimer’s grip and hobbled away, not caring about wearing her heels. The corners of Mortimer’s lips curled up as he watched her run away. “Get Hunter to see me at the office tomorrow morning,” he ordered Monroe. At night, Tiffany had a pleasant dream. In it, she was sitting on Mortimer’s back, both of her arms wrapped around his neck. If not for the alarm clock loudly breaking up the dream, she did not dare to think of what would happen next. Tiffany reached up to see how hot her forehead was, and then slapped her reddened face. Had an illness caused her to have such an absurd dream? Just in case, she bought some medicine on the way to the office. While at the cashier, she suddenly thought of something. “Is this medicine safe for pregnant women to consume?” “There are a few which aren’t quite suitable. I can switch them out for you.” The shop assistant took a few other types of medicine and then pointed at a line of health supplements on the rack. “These health supplements aren’t just suitable for the young and elderly, they are also very good vitamin boosters for people going through the early stages of pregnancy. It’s very good for both the mother and the child. Would you like to buy some to try out?” Tiffany nodded, letting the shop assistant take a few boxes. After reaching NC Company, she asked for Angus’ help to place all of the unsold products left by her father on the internet. Whatever could be sold would help cover the debt. Seeing Angus’ worried expression, Tiffany apologized, embarrassed, “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have insulted the banker.” “No. What you did was right.” Angus was a man. He had been in the industry for many years, and he knew very well that some people loved taking advantage of other people. If Tiffany did not fight back, they would only become worse. However, it would be impossible for them to obtain a loan from the banks now. If they wanted money, they had to think of other ideas. “Besides the banks, we can find investors,” Angus said, “I have already compiled a list of the people who have the ability to provide financial aid to our company. Take a look at it.” The list was sorted in order of the companies’ net worth. On the very top, Tiffany saw a familiar name. KB Corporation, Mortimer Campbell. Behind his name was a string of numbers unimaginable by the average person. Tiffany knew that the Campbells were rich, but she did not know just how rich. She couldn’t help but ask Angus, “Are you sure his net worth is that much?” “Of course. In fact, this is only based on what information I could find from the market. The real sum would be higher, not lower,” Angus explained, not knowing that Tiffany was already married to Mortimer. “If we could just get his help, all of our problems would be solved. But he is too mysterious. I’ve thought of many ways, but I have never been able to obtain his contact number. What if we went to KB Corporation to try our luck?” Tiffany was silent for a moment. Then, she shook her head and crossed out Mortimer’s name in red ink. Even if she had to beg on the streets, she would never ask for help from a man who walked all over her dignity.
