Chapter 2

In the shadowy light, his seemingly decisive back faltered, his hands trembled violently, he turned his head and stared at me, revealing a glint of determination in his eyes. “What are you talking about? Say it again!” His eyes were as cold as ice as he slowly walked toward me. “Divorce,” I said as straightened my back, but I couldn't control my emotions anymore. I yelled out loudly, “Divorce, Xavier, I want to divorce you. I'm fed up with such days when you act like an inferior widow. I want to live my own life!” “Widow? You really are naive!” he sneered, pinching my chin fiercely. His pupils were filled with burning torment. “Yasmin, let me tell you this, you can never get rid of me in your life. I want you to live forever in the shadow of Rachelle until you die. You can't die before me, and even when I die first, I will force you to attend my funeral, do you understand?” The door slammed shut, and my body slid weakly against the wall as hot tears rolled down my cheeks. He wouldn’t even let me die! Three years later, my wedding anniversary is the death day of my husband's beloved woman. How long will this day last? I laughed mockingly, and as I was about to go back to bed, I suddenly felt a hot stream between my legs. I reached out and felt a sticky fluid. When I saw red on my fingertips, my face turned pale instantly. I checked myself into a hospital in the middle of the night. It was early in the morning when the examination was over. Upon seeing the results, the doctor frowned, and asked, “Where is your husband?” I was startled and said in a panic, “He is busy, doctor, what's the matter?” “What's the matter? It's a big deal!” the doctor exclaimed as she looked at me with a weird expression. “I didn't know how to handle a baby during pregnancy, so I almost lost my child!” My face was pale and stunned, “What did you say?” “You are pregnant, four weeks pregnant! Bleeding could have been a sign of miscarriage...” The doctor was still talking, but I couldn't hear anything, and my mind was in utter chaos. The existence of the baby was not a surprise to me, but it was still frightening. Xavier hates me so much. If he knew that I was pregnant, he would definitely think it was me who did the trick, and the child would definitely not survive... I don't know how I went home. I thought about it all the way and still couldn’t figure out what to do. After that, I didn't see Xavier for more than a month, so I deceived myself by keeping myself busy, then eventually forgot about it. Until this day, when I received his call. “Tomorrow is mother's birthday. There will be a gathering and you’re expected to be there.” An idea suddenly came into mind. After three years of marriage, our mother-in-law kept urging us to have children. If I give my child as a birthday present to my mother-in-law, it will surely save me and my fragile marriage with Xavier. Thinking of this, a long-lost smile crept on the corner of my mouth. The next day, the Jin Family’s decoration was very lively, with lights and festoons everywhere. When I arrived, Xavier was talking on the phone with his back to me, “I will send a bunch of the freshest lilies right away, um, the kind that is covered with dew, she likes those.” She likes those? Who? I was confused as I approached him. He turned his head and saw that it was me, his smile disappeared instantly and a hint of annoyance flashed in his eyes, “Can’t you see I’m busy?” The smile that has crept on the corner of my mouth turned into bitterness. I wanted to disappear, but when I think of the baby in my stomach, I feel the urge to fight again. I pulled his hand, and whispered, “Husband.” It was the first time I had the courage to call him this way. He opened his eyes and looked at me like I’m some circus monkey. My face flushed red as I grasped his hand tighter, “Husband, I am pregnant…” The words were not finished, but at this moment, there was a commotion at the door. Xavier reflexively flung my hand away and ran to the door, a woman walked out slowly in the darkness. Wearing a red dress and delicate makeup, this woman… can’t be Rachelle. It’s not possible.
