I was about to pick up the photos when Grandma suddenly came over and took them from my hands.
“It’s already late, go to sleep now,” she said softly.
Grandma placed the photos under her pillow and settled into bed. I nodded, noticing the sudden shift in her mood.
She must have been deeply saddened by seeing the photo of my mom. It had been more than 20 years since my mother left, and we’d never heard a word from her since.
I glanced at my grandmother, her hair now completely white from the years that had passed. I didn’t ask any questions, sensing she needed her space.
I went back to my room, carrying the blanket I had taken from Grandma’s wardrobe.
I was only spending the night with her before heading back to San Francisco. We had breakfast together, and as we finished, Grandma handed me a card.
“I’ve saved all the money you’ve sent me over the years,” she said, her voice soft. “Use this for Hannah’s surgery. I still have some savings here.”
